Freediving in Aqaba
Aqaba is Jordan's freediving capital — the only stretch of Jordanian coast and one of the best places in the region to learn or train. Warm water, generally calm conditions, and depth a short way from shore.
Conditions on the Gulf of Aqaba
The Gulf of Aqaba is a narrow, deep arm of the Red Sea — roughly 25 km wide and over 1,000 m deep in places. That produces water that is consistently warm, often clear, and deep close to shore. Mornings are generally the calmest; afternoons can pick up wind in some seasons. Conditions vary, and your instructor will pick the right site for the day.
When to come
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons — mild air temperatures and reliably calm mornings. Summer is hot on land but the water stays in the high 20s. Winter is cooler (low 20s) but perfectly divable with appropriate wetsuit thickness.
Where to train
Tala Bay, a marina enclave south of Aqaba city, is the base for most AIDA training in Jordan — including ours. From the marina, sheltered house reefs and open-water training lines are minutes away. For specific sites, see our guide to Aqaba's freediving sites.

Is Aqaba good for freediving?
+
Aqaba is one of the most accessible training destinations in the region. The Gulf of Aqaba is warm year-round, generally calm in the morning, and drops to serious depth close to shore — ideal for AIDA 1 through AIDA 3.
When is the best time to freedive in Aqaba?
+
Aqaba is divable in every month. Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are typically the most comfortable, with mild air and the calmest morning conditions. Summer is hot but the water stays warm; winter is cooler but still divable in a 5 mm wetsuit.
How deep can you freedive in Aqaba?
+
Depth is available — the Gulf of Aqaba reaches well over 1,000 m offshore. For training, working depths of 20–40 m are reachable a short distance from shore at multiple sites. Depth on any course depends on student readiness and safety.
Where do AIDA schools operate in Aqaba?
+
Most AIDA schools in Aqaba — including Jordan Freedivers — operate from Tala Bay, a marina enclave south of the city centre. Tala Bay offers protected entries, boat access, and proximity to the main training sites.
