Freediving course guide
A freediving course is the fastest, safest path into the sport. Here's how the recognized certifications stack up — and how to pick the right one for your time and goals.
The AIDA progression
AIDA International is the original freediving-only agency and the standard in competitive freediving. Its recreational pathway runs from AIDA 1 to AIDA 4, plus instructor levels above.
Introduction to Freediving →
1 day. No certification depth. Theory + confined water. Best for: trying freediving without committing to a full course.
Freediver →
2–3 days. First real certification. Theory, confined-water skills, open-water line training to recreational depth, rescue drills.
Advanced Freediver →
4 days. Free immersion, FRC dives, mouthfill introduction, deeper buddy/rescue protocols. Requires AIDA 2.
Intensive Pathway →
7 days combined. The fastest route from beginner to AIDA 3 certified — for travellers with a single trip window.
AIDA vs SSI vs PADI Freediver
All three are recognized internationally. The practical differences:
- ·AIDA — freediving-only, deepest curriculum on technique and safety, accepted by every freediving competition.
- ·SSI Freediving — strong materials, large network, recreationally equivalent to AIDA at the entry levels.
- ·PADI Freediver — easiest to find globally (PADI's scuba reach), recreationally equivalent at entry, less depth at advanced levels.
We teach AIDA. If you already hold an SSI or PADI certification at a comparable level, we can crossover you to AIDA without repeating everything.
How to choose
- ·One day to spare on holiday? AIDA 1.
- ·You want a real cert and 2–3 days? AIDA 2.
- ·Already AIDA 2 and want depth? AIDA 3.
- ·Travelling and want both? The AIDA 2+3 intensive in one week.
Courses — common questions
Which freediving course should a complete beginner take?
+
AIDA 1 if you want a single-day introduction with no certification depth target. AIDA 2 if you want a real certification — it's run over 2 to 3 days and covers theory, confined-water, and open-water training with depth.
AIDA vs SSI vs PADI freediver — does it matter?
+
All three are recognized internationally. AIDA is the original freediving-only agency and is the standard in competitive freediving. SSI and PADI Freediver are widely accepted recreationally. We teach AIDA because the curriculum is deeper on technique and safety.
How long does AIDA 2 take?
+
2 to 3 days depending on group size and conditions. Typically: one theory + confined-water day, then 1 to 2 open-water sessions on the line.
Do I need to buy gear before a course?
+
No. We provide mask, snorkel, long fins, and wetsuit for every course. If you decide to continue, buying your own low-volume mask and fins is the first investment.
