Scuba vs freediving in Aqaba
Aqaba's Red Sea coast works beautifully for both. They're not competing — they're different ways of being in the water. Here's how to think about it.
At a glance
- 30–60 minute dives
- Heavier gear, tanks needed
- Can penetrate wrecks
- Stationary observation
- 3–4 day Open Water cert
- Single breath, short dives
- Mask, fins, wetsuit only
- Silent — closer to wildlife
- Mobile, gliding movement
- 1-day AIDA 1, 2–3 day AIDA 2
Aqaba sites — what each is good for
Aqaba's coast packs reefs, walls, and purpose-sunk wrecks into a short stretch, most within minutes of Tala Bay. A few highlights:
- ·Japanese Garden — coral garden in the shallows, drop-off behind. Great for freediving line work; also a popular scuba site.
- ·Cedar Pride wreck — top of the wreck is freediving-accessible; penetration is scuba-only.
- ·Power Station — wall site, quick depth — useful for freediver training.
See the full sites guide for how we pick a site on any given day.
Doing both on one trip
Plan freediving first, then scuba. The reverse significantly increases decompression sickness risk because residual nitrogen from scuba can be liberated by the pressure changes of repeated breath-hold dives. Always wait the agency-recommended interval after a scuba dive before any freediving — and never fly within 24 hours of a scuba dive.
Which to start with
If you want to see more in a single immersion, scuba. If you want a quieter, more athletic, gear-light experience and a fast certification window, freediving wins. Many of our students do AIDA 1 as a "try-it" first — one day, no commitment — and decide from there.
Scuba vs freediving — common questions
Can I do both scuba and freediving on the same trip to Aqaba?
+
Yes — but order matters. Freedive first, then scuba, with adequate surface intervals. Freediving after scuba significantly increases decompression sickness risk; always wait the agency-recommended interval after a scuba dive.
Which gets you closer to the marine life?
+
Freediving. No bubbles, no noise — you can glide past fish that would scatter from a scuba diver. Scuba lets you stay longer to observe in one place.
Is the Cedar Pride wreck accessible to freedivers?
+
The top of the Cedar Pride sits at recreational freediving depth and is a regular destination for certified freedivers. Penetrating the wreck is scuba-only.
Which is cheaper to learn?
+
AIDA 1 is the cheapest entry point into either sport (120 JOD, one day). PADI Open Water scuba typically runs 3 to 4 days and costs more. Long-term, freediving gear is cheaper because there's no tank fills or regulator service.
